Abstract

THE SEMANTIC JOURNEY OF THE “SKY” CONCEPT FROM THE PAST UNTIL TODAY
Language is the most important means of communication that ensures the mutual understanding among people. People express their thoughts, emotions, and desires with language. Language is used in mutual understanding among people as well as conveying the cultural heritage to future generations. Language gives us information on the life styles of the people who speak it, their cultures, viewpoints on the world, and the relations they establish with other societies. The Turkish Language is one of the most common and oldest mother tongues that were formed from the oldest language products known by us today. In this study, the word “sky”, which has been used in many sources of the earliest written documents of the Turkish language, the Orhun Monuments, has been examined in its journey until today in terms of semantics. In the examination, it was observed that the word “sky” (i.e. “gök” in Turkish) was used as “kök” in the language of Gokturks, in the Uighur language, and during the Karahanlı Era; and as “gök”, i.e. the sky, in the Old Anatolian Turkish Language after the letter “k” being converted into “g”. It was determined that the word “teñri” in the Köl Tigin Scriptures was used to mean the “sky”. Later on, it was also determined that the word has been used to mean the sky, heaven, the space in which the heavenly bodies float; the color of the sky and the sea, blue or bluish green, indigo; the night; under-ripe and similar other meanings until today, and revealed with witnesses.
