Abstract

EFFECT OF MODELLING LEARNING ON SOUND RELATED CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOL 4TH GRADE STUDENTS
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of modelling learning cycle on conceptual development concerning the topic of sound of fourth grade primary school students. The research is a qualitative study and a non-experimental one where group pre-test and post-test pattern is used. Semi-constructed interview questions were used as a data collection tool. This study was conducted with 33 (16 boys, 17 girls) participants enrolled in a public school in a medium sized city of East Black Sea Region of Northern Turkey. Qualitative raw data was analysed in accordance with descriptive method. In the next step, the answers of participants were classified for conceptual knowledge levels. As a result of the findings, it was seen that modelling learning cycle process positively affected the conceptual development of students concerning sound concept, formation of sound and sound propagation but sound sources and intensity of sound were partially affected. In addition, modelling learning cycle reduced misconceptions of students about the topic of sound. Consequently some recommendations have been put forward for new science learning studies.
